Shifting Gears: Why I’m Moving from GEO to AEO
While Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) focuses on the technical side of being "seen" by AI, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is about being selected as the definitive source. To win in 2026, small businesses must move beyond "hacking the machine" and start creating "Answer-First" content. By sharing lived experiences—like closing a store and moving to the cornfields—you provide the "Human Data" that AI models are forced to cite.
The View from the Cornfields
If you’ve been following my journey, you know I’ve made some big changes lately. I closed my physical storefront and moved out to the cornfields. I traded the constant noise of a "Main Street" shop for a Northern Lights and lots of ducks (like a scary amount of them).
But I’ll be the first to admit: Just because my life slowed down doesn't mean the digital world did. In fact, it’s moving so fast that I’ve had to pull over and check my own map.
The Pivot: From GEO to AEO
For a while now, I’ve been telling you that Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) was my primary focus. I was obsessed with the technical side—how to make sure the AI "saw" my brand. But as I’ve spent more time crafting at home and cutting back on the electronic noise, I’ve realized something important.
Being "seen" by an AI isn't enough. You have to be the answer.
I’ve shifted my focus to AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). While GEO is about the machine, AEO is about the person asking the machine a question. It’s about being so clear, so authoritative, and so human that when a searcher asks for help, the AI doesn't just list you—it recommends you.
How We Win as Small Business Owners
The "Big Box" competitors have teams of people trying to "GEO-hack" the system. But they don't have your story. They don't have the grit of a store closure or the peace of a cornfield sunset. AI models crave Entity Authority, and that only comes from real skin in the game.
Here is how I’m pivoting my strategy to be the "Top Answer," and how you can too:
Stop the "Fluff" and Start Solving: If an AI can summarize your blog post in two seconds without mentioning your name, you’ve lost the click. Write things only you can say. Use your specific business data and your personal stories as the "proof" that makes you the authority.
The "Answer Block" Method: See that bold section at the top of this post? That’s an Answer Block. It’s designed to be "grabbed" by an AI and used as the featured answer. It makes the machine’s job easier, which makes your brand more visible.
Be the Primary Source: Whether I’m at the drop zone with Zach or crafting with my best friend, I’m gathering unique human insights. When you share your specific process, you become a primary source that the AI has to cite.
The Soma Truth
The world is moving fast, but you don't have to break your neck trying to keep up. By moving from the technical "how" of GEO to the authoritative "who" of AEO, you’re building a business that stands out because it’s rooted in something real. You can live a simpler life and still be the first name mentioned on the world's biggest stage.
The Goal: Don't just be a choice. Be the Answer.
